But the business implications tell a different story.<\/p>\n<p>Low water levels on the Danube and Rhine are already affecting freight transportation, energy\u00a0generation\u00a0and industrial operations. Similar conditions have been reported across other major European river systems, including the Po and the Loire, highlighting a challenge that extends far beyond a single region.<\/p>\n<p>What makes this particularly relevant is that most\u00a0organisations\u00a0are not prepared to assess the impact.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Almost every\u00a0company can explain its exposure to energy prices. Far fewer can explain its exposure to water.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Yet water sits at the heart of modern economies. It supports power generation, manufacturing,\u00a0logistics\u00a0networks,\u00a0agriculture\u00a0and critical infrastructure. When water availability declines, business disruptions rarely appear as \u201cwater problems\u201d.\u00a0They appear\u00a0as\u00a0rising operating costs, delayed deliveries, supplier failures, reduced\u00a0productivity\u00a0and pressure on margins.<\/p>\n<p><strong>In other words, water is becoming a business issue without being\u00a0recognised\u00a0as one.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This creates an immediate challenge for boards and management teams.<\/p>\n<p>Many\u00a0organisations\u00a0have invested heavily in cyber resilience, energy\u00a0resilience\u00a0and supply chain resilience. However,\u00a0relatively few\u00a0have examined the assumptions connecting these areas to water availability.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Questions that deserve board-level attention include:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>How\u00a0exposed are our key suppliers\u00a0to prolonged drought conditions?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Which parts of our value chain depend on water-stressed regions?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>How vulnerable are our\u00a0logistics\u00a0networks to restrictions on major waterways?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>What would be the\u00a0financial impact\u00a0of higher transportation costs or reduced energy generation?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>These are not\u00a0sustainability\u00a0questions. They are questions about operational resilience, cost\u00a0management\u00a0and long-term competitiveness.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The companies that navigate this transition successfully will not necessarily be those with the lowest water consumption. They will be those with the best visibility over their dependencies and the clearest understanding of how physical climate events can translate into business disruption.<\/p>\n<p>A practical starting point is to map critical water dependencies across operations, suppliers,\u00a0logistics\u00a0routes\u00a0and energy sources; test the financial and operational impact of prolonged disruption; and integrate the results into business continuity,\u00a0procurement\u00a0and investment decisions.<\/p>\n<p>The energy crisis taught\u00a0organisations\u00a0an important lesson: dependencies matter. The current situation across Europe\u2019s rivers may be teaching us the next one.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Perhaps the\u00a0question is no longer whether your\u00a0organisation\u00a0has a water strategy.
